Burma (Myanmar has been the official name since 1989) is a newly opened country for tourists.
This multi cultural country with more than 60 different minority tribes and with apprx. 50 million
inhabitants, has since far back had problems being unified.
It was until 1948 colonized by the British and part of the British Indian Empire. After independence,
fighting intensified between the different warring factions, until a military coup in the early sixties.
Burma has since then been a dictatorship.
There have, however, been some great changes in the last year due to the first partially democratic
elections and lifting of some of the sanctions. Democracy and freedom is slowly taking off! Burma welcomes
tourists. Political prisoners are freed and the hero of the Burmese people Aung San Su Kyi is now a
